El mapa
Mani Mājra is a historic town on the eastern edge of Chandigarh, close to the border with Panchkula in Haryana, at the foot of the Shivalik hills. It existed long before Le Corbusier's planned city was built in the 1950s. It was the seat of a local ruling family, whose fort still stands in the old town.
On a map, the difference is immediate. To the west is Chandigarh's famous grid of large rectangular sectors separated by wide roads. Mani Mājra, by contrast, is a dense tangle of narrow, irregular lanes grown over centuries. Newer housing and a modern township have since grown around the old core, and seasonal streams, called choes, run down from the hills.
A Mani Mājra map poster captures this meeting of two urban traditions in one frame: the organic North Indian town and the modernist planned city. Nearby is the Mata Mansa Devi temple in Panchkula, one of the region's most important pilgrimage sites. For residents and former residents, the print shows how their town has kept its own character next to the city.
A dense, irregular network of narrow streets around the fort shows the town's pre-modern origins and its long history.
The regular grid of the planned city next door forms a sharp geometric contrast along the town's western side.
Seasonal streams and rising ground to the north and east show the foothills that frame the area.

Por qué Mani Mājra
People who grew up in Mani Mājra often feel strongly that it has its own identity apart from Chandigarh. A map that shows the old town and the grid side by side reflects that clearly.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised in English or Hindi. Five styles are available. Digital HD files cost $9 in six sizes, and matte printed posters with an optional wooden frame can be ordered.
