Meyzieu lies at the eastern edge of the Lyon metropolitan area, on flat ground above the Rhône plain. From above, its northern side is unmistakable: the Grand Large, a wide reservoir on the Jonage canal, spreads its irregular shoreline beside the town, with the green expanse of Miribel-Jonage beyond. South of the water, the street network mixes old village lanes with later suburban housing.
The Jonage canal was dug at the end of the nineteenth century to feed a hydroelectric plant, and the Grand Large reservoir came with it. Today the lake is used for sailing and walking, and on the map it gives Meyzieu something most suburbs lack: a large, calm expanse of open water set directly against the built-up area.
A Meyzieu map poster balances these two halves, water and town. The older centre, the housing estates and the transport lines heading toward Lyon and the airport are all visible, while the lake gives the composition a generous empty space.
