El mapa
From above, the Mission District reads as one of the calmest grids in San Francisco. Numbered cross streets run south from roughly 14th Street to Cesar Chavez, crossed by long north–south arteries such as Mission, Valencia, Guerrero and Dolores. The hills that crowd the rest of the city stay mostly at its edges. That is part of why the neighborhood often catches sunshine while fog sits over the western districts.
The district takes its name from Mission San Francisco de Asís, better known as Mission Dolores, founded in 1776. Its adobe chapel is considered the oldest intact building in the city. On a map it sits near the corner of Dolores and 16th Street, a small footprint beside a much larger basilica, a few blocks north of the sloping green rectangle of Dolores Park.
A Mission District map poster captures a neighborhood that grew street by street rather than by grand plan. Lots are narrow, blocks are long, and alleys slip between them, including the ones known for their murals. The eastern side flattens toward industrial blocks and the freeway, while the western side begins to climb, so the lines of the print tighten and loosen as the terrain changes.
A long rectangle of lawn that tilts upward toward the southwest. It is one of the few large open spaces in the district and shows as a clear pale shape among the dense blocks.
The district's main commercial artery runs the length of the neighborhood. BART stations beneath it at 16th and 24th Streets mark its two busiest crossings.
Between the main streets, short alleys such as Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley add fine lines to the grid. On the ground they are lined with painted murals.

Por qué Mission District
People who lived on a particular block of Valencia or 24th Street often want the grid itself on the wall. It keeps a record of taquerias, bookshops and walks to the park, drawn as clean black lines.
You can add a title, a subtitle such as a move-in date, and a coordinates line, then choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The HD files cost $9 and include six print sizes as PNG and PDF.
