Mödling sits just south of Vienna, at the point where the forested hills of the Wienerwald come down to the Vienna Basin. The Mödlingbach stream leaves the hills through a narrow gorge called the Klausen and runs straight through the town. That meeting of forest and plain is clear on any map, with the street pattern thick on the east side and fading out to the west.
The historic centre is small and irregular, a knot of lanes around the main square and the parish church on its rise. The railway and newer districts spread across the flatter ground to the east. Beethoven spent several summers here in the early 1820s and worked on the Missa solemnis during his stays.
