El mapa
Moncton lies in southeastern New Brunswick on the north bank of the Petitcodiac River, at a sharp bend where the river turns towards the Bay of Fundy. The river is the defining shape on the map: a broad channel, muddy at low tide, that curves across the frame. Moncton sits on one side, the town of Riverview on the other, and Dieppe spreads out to the east.
The city grew as a railway centre, which earned it the nickname Hub City, and its streets still reflect that role. Downtown, around Main Street, follows a compact grid near the river. Newer neighbourhoods and commercial areas spread north and west along the main roads, and rail lines and yards cut long straight paths through the city.
The Petitcodiac is known for its tidal bore, a wave that pushes upstream as the Fundy tide rises. Magnetic Hill, an optical illusion on the edge of the city, has drawn visitors for decades, and Moncton was Canada's first officially bilingual city. A Moncton map poster shows the river bend, the grid and the suburbs in one balanced layout.
The river makes a wide turn beside the city, giving the map a strong curved form. It separates Moncton from Riverview on the opposite bank and adds open space to the frame.
A regular block pattern near the river marks the historic centre, with Main Street at its core. Railway corridors run close by, as they have since the city's early growth.
Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview form one continuous urban area on the map. Bridges and main roads around the river join their street networks together.
