El mapa
Moratuwa stretches along the west coast of Sri Lanka, just south of Colombo, on a narrow band of land between the sea and a network of lagoons and lakes. From above it is long rather than round. The Galle Road and the coastal railway run parallel to the shore, and neighbourhoods fill the strip between them and the water inland.
Bolgoda Lake lies along the eastern and southern edges of the city. It is a large, branching body of water that reaches into the city in fingers and inlets, with small islands scattered through it. Toward the south, its outflow reaches the sea near Panadura. These waterways give the map an intricate, almost lace-like pattern.
Moratuwa is known for its long tradition of carpentry and furniture making. It is also home to the University of Moratuwa, one of the country's leading engineering universities, whose campus lies at Katubedda. A Moratuwa map poster captures a city defined by its edges, with the straight coast on one side and the winding lake on the other.
The Galle Road and the railway run close to the shore, drawing two parallel lines along the western edge of the city beside a long, straight beach.
A large lake with many arms and small islands curls around the inland side of the city and gives the map its most intricate shapes.
The University of Moratuwa occupies grounds near the water, a block of open space and buildings where generations of Sri Lankan engineers and architects have studied.
