Mukamira lies in Nyabihu district in Rwanda's Western Province, in high country near the Virunga volcanoes. This is cool, fertile land, and the district is known for farming, especially potatoes. On a map the town is a modest cluster of streets along the main road, surrounded by hillsides divided into small farm plots.
The terrain shapes everything. Roads follow ridges and valley floors instead of a grid, and fields cover the slopes in a dense patchwork. The main road through the area links Musanze to the north with Rubavu and Lake Kivu to the west, and it runs through the town as its strongest line.
