Mumbwa is a district town in Zambia's Central Province, about 150 kilometres west of Lusaka. It lies on the Great West Road, the main highway toward Kafue National Park and Western Province. From above the town is organised around that route: a central strip of shops and services, a grid of residential streets beside it, and open bush and farmland all around.
The area is agricultural, with maize and cotton among the crops grown on the surrounding farms, and Mumbwa is the local centre for a wide rural district. Nearby, the Mumbwa Caves are an important archaeological site. Excavations there have found evidence of human occupation reaching far back into the Stone Age.
