Musselburgh sits on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, a few miles east of Edinburgh, where the River Esk ends its run to the sea. From above, the river is the town's organising line. It curves north through the centre, crossed by a handful of bridges, and opens into a wide mouth where the built-up streets give way to shoreline and open ground.
West of the river, Fisherrow keeps its small harbour and a waterfront that follows the curve of the coast. East of it, the old town centre gathers along the main street before the map opens out into the oval of the racecourse and the links inside it. A Musselburgh map poster shows this balance clearly: dense streets on either bank, then flat, open land running to the water.
The town has long been called the Honest Toun, and its links are among the oldest places in the world where golf is known to have been played. South of the centre, Inveresk sits on higher ground above the Esk, with larger plots and quieter streets. East of the river, the racecourse forms a long oval near the shore, with the historic nine-hole links laid out inside it, one of the most distinctive shapes on the poster.

On the western side, the small harbour at Fisherrow breaks the smooth coastline with its enclosing walls, marking the town's long connection to fishing and the sea.
