Najafābād lies about 25 kilometres west of Isfahan, on the broad farming plain of the Zayanderud basin. From above, the town reads as a compact, fairly regular grid of streets and courtyard houses, surrounded by a patchwork of orchards and fields. Long main roads connect it east to Isfahan and west towards the mountains, and newer districts have grown up along them.
The town dates from the Safavid era and is traditionally linked with Shah Abbas I. Its name refers to the holy city of Najaf. Over the centuries it became one of the main towns of Isfahan province. It is known for farming, especially pomegranates, and for the traditional water channels that once carried water across the plain to its gardens.
