From above, Naju reads as two towns sharing one river valley. The older centre sits near the Yeongsan River, its streets gathered around the outline of a former walled town, while farmland and orchards spread across the flat ground beyond. A short distance away, a planned district of broad roads and regular blocks shows how recently the city has grown.
That newer quarter is Bitgaram, Naju's innovation city, built to take in public institutions moved out of the capital region, including the headquarters of the Korea Electric Power Corporation. Its geometry contrasts sharply with the irregular lanes of the old town, and a Naju map poster holds both patterns in the same frame, linked by the roads and rail line that cross the valley.
Naju is also known across Korea for its pears, grown in orchards that fill much of the surrounding countryside. In black and white those fields turn into quiet open space, so the river bends, the transport lines and the town's two centres carry the composition.
