The main road
The road through town forms the spine of the map. Shops, houses and junctions gather along it, and most of the smaller lanes branch out from this single line.

El mapa
Namayumba sits in Uganda's Central Region, a little north of the equator and northwest of Kampala. From above, the town is organised around its main road. Buildings and plots cluster along it, and narrower lanes and footpaths branch off into the countryside. The centre is compact, and the built-up area soon gives way to small farms, scattered homesteads and the rounded hills typical of this part of the country.
The landscape around Namayumba follows the usual pattern of central Uganda. Low ridges alternate with valley floors, and many of those valleys hold wetlands and slow streams. On a map this shows as a loose, organic network. Roads keep to higher ground, tracks follow the contours, and open spaces mark the lower, wetter land. Nothing here is laid out on a grid, so the street pattern looks drawn by the terrain rather than a planner.
A Namayumba map poster keeps only the essentials: the line of the main road, the branching lanes, the edges of settlement and the pale gaps where fields and wetlands lie. With about twenty thousand residents, the town is small enough that its shape fits on one sheet and still reads clearly. The result is a quiet, legible portrait of an ordinary Ugandan town, shown in fine black lines.
The road through town forms the spine of the map. Shops, houses and junctions gather along it, and most of the smaller lanes branch out from this single line.
Away from the centre, narrow roads and paths spread out in irregular lines, linking homesteads and farm plots across the surrounding hills without any regular grid.
The low ground between ridges often holds wetland and small streams. On the poster these areas appear as open, unbuilt spaces that break up the road network.
