Channels and inlets
Rivers and drainage channels cross the low ground on their way to the sea, splitting the district into islands of streets and fields and giving the print a strong horizontal rhythm.

El mapa
Narutochō-mitsuishi belongs to Naruto, the city at the northeastern corner of Tokushima Prefecture. The land here is low and flat, crossed by rivers and man-made channels on their way to the sea. Houses, fields and small industrial plots fill the space between the waterways, and on a map the pattern breaks into many irregular pieces rather than one clear grid.
A little to the east is the Naruto Strait, where the tide produces the whirlpools the city is named after. The Ōnaruto Bridge spans the strait to Awaji Island, carrying the expressway toward Kobe. Naruto is also where the Shikoku pilgrimage of 88 temples traditionally begins, and pilgrims start walking from the first temple here.
A Narutochō-mitsuishi map poster works well because of that mix of land and water. Channels, coastline and field boundaries make up most of the image, with denser streets gathered along the roads. It's a close-up portrait of a local district, set against the wider shape of the Naruto coast.
Rivers and drainage channels cross the low ground on their way to the sea, splitting the district into islands of streets and fields and giving the print a strong horizontal rhythm.
To the east the land narrows toward the Naruto Strait, where tidal whirlpools form beneath the Ōnaruto Bridge, one of the best-known sights in Shikoku.
Naruto is the traditional start of the 88-temple Shikoku pilgrimage, so for many walkers this stretch of coast is where a very long route around the island begins.
