El mapa
Nasukarasuyama lies in the east of Tochigi Prefecture, in hilly country drained by the Naka River. The city was formed in 2005 when the town of Karasuyama merged with neighbouring Minaminasu. Its map combines a compact historic centre with wide rural areas of forest, rice paddies and small villages spread along valley roads.
Old Karasuyama grew as a castle town, and its streets still follow a long, narrow plan along the valley floor, with temples and shrines at the edges where the hills rise. On a Nasukarasuyama map poster, the broad course of the Naka River cuts a strong line through the landscape, in contrast with the fine, winding roads of the hills.
The town is known for the Yamaage festival, when large stage sets are put up in the streets for kabuki performances. In 2016, UNESCO recognised it as one of Japan's Yama, Hoko, Yatai float festivals. Local washi papermaking is another long-standing craft associated with the area.
The river flows through the municipality in wide bends and is one of the clearest natural features on the map. It is also well known for sweetfish fishing.
The historic core of Karasuyama runs along the valley in a narrow band of streets. It is the densest part of the poster and the setting for the festival.
Narrow roads follow the valleys between wooded hills, linking scattered villages and rice fields. They form soft, branching lines across the outer frame.
