Neustadt in Holstein lies on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein, on the shore of Lübeck Bay. It was founded in the thirteenth century as a planned town, and its old centre still shows that origin: a regular pattern of streets around a large market square, with the church close by.
Water shapes the rest of the map. The harbour opens onto the bay to the east, and to the north of the old town spreads the Binnenwasser, a lagoon connected to the sea. The brick Kremper Tor, one of the old town gates, still stands at the edge of the historic centre.
The bay offshore is also where the ships Cap Arcona and Thielbek were sunk in May 1945 with thousands of concentration camp prisoners aboard, remembered by memorials in the town. A Neustadt in Holstein map poster shows the calm geometry of the old town between two bodies of water.
