El mapa
New Caney is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Texas, north-east of Houston. Its map has two layers. Highway corridors run through it, most notably US 59, now signed as part of Interstate 69. Off those corridors, subdivisions of curving streets and cul-de-sacs sit among large stretches of pine forest.
This is the edge of the East Texas Piney Woods, and trees still separate many neighbourhoods. Waterways shape the area too. The East Fork of the San Jacinto River runs nearby, and Lake Houston lies a short way to the south. Channels and creeks cut through the street pattern and stop it at irregular lines.
A New Caney map poster shows how suburban Texas meets the forest. There are long straight highways, looping residential streets and gaps where woodland and floodplain remain. In black and white the contrast between planned curves and open ground is clear, and the map feels spacious in a way denser city maps do not.
The highway runs through the area on a north-east line and is the strongest single stroke on the map. Commercial strips and junctions line it, linking New Caney with Houston.
Residential streets loop and dead-end in the pattern typical of modern Texas suburbs. Each subdivision stands out as its own small group of curves set into the trees.
The East Fork of the San Jacinto River and the northern reaches of Lake Houston bring water into the picture. Their floodplains leave wide, unbuilt spaces between neighbourhoods.
