Newark is the seat of Licking County in central Ohio, east of Columbus. Its downtown is organised around a classic courthouse square, with the county courthouse at the centre and a grid of streets spreading outward. The North and South Forks of the Licking River meet at the city, and their curving channels contrast with the straight blocks.
The city is best known for the Newark Earthworks, built by the Hopewell culture roughly two thousand years ago. The Octagon and the Great Circle are among the largest geometric earthen enclosures in the world. In 2023 they were inscribed as part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a detailed map, their precise shapes sit among ordinary modern streets.

On the west side of the city, the Hopewell built a vast octagon joined to a circle, aligned with the cycles of the moon. Its outline is unmistakable from above.
Licking River forks
The North and South Forks meet at Newark to form the Licking River. They add soft curves and green corridors to a city otherwise laid out in straight lines.
