Nguigmi is a town in the Diffa region in the far east of Niger, near the northern end of the Lake Chad basin. It once stood close to the lake's shore. As Lake Chad has shrunk dramatically since the 1960s, the water has pulled far back, and today the town is surrounded by dry former lakebed, dunes and Sahelian scrub.
On a map Nguigmi is a compact cluster of streets, mostly low and closely built. Sandy tracks spread out in several directions, and the land around it is almost blank. It is a place of wide horizons, and in black and white that emptiness becomes the strongest part of the design. The town reads as a small, dense mark in open space.
