El mapa
Niles is a city in Trumbull County, Ohio, in the Mahoning Valley between Youngstown and Warren. The Mahoning River runs through it, and the map shows the older town arranged on either side of the water, its grid of streets crossing the river on a few bridges, with Mosquito Creek joining from the north as the river continues southeast.
The city grew with the valley's iron and steel industry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the rail lines and riverside industrial land that served those mills are still visible in the plan. Residential neighbourhoods spread out from the centre in regular blocks, while commercial development gathers along the main roads toward Youngstown and Warren.
Niles is the birthplace of William McKinley, the twenty-fifth president of the United States, and the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial, a classical marble building housing a library and museum, stands in the city. A Niles map poster places that history on the ground it belongs to: a river town shaped by industry and neighbourhood streets.
The river passes through the city in a gentle curve, dividing the grid and giving the poster a clear natural line.
The creek enters from the north and meets the Mahoning in the city, adding a second waterway and a strip of open ground to the map.
Rail lines and former mill sites along the river form long, broad bands through the plan, marking the valley's steelmaking past.
