Onyar is a town in the Ili region of northwestern Xinjiang, east of the city of Yining. The Ili valley is one of the greenest parts of the region. It is a wide plain between mountain ranges, watered by rivers flowing down from the Tian Shan and farmed intensively for grain, fruit and other crops.
On the map the town has a fairly regular layout, with straight streets and rectangular blocks set in a landscape divided by roads and field boundaries. The pattern reflects the flat ground of the plain and its long history of farming. Settlements are linked by roads running across open, cultivated land.
