Pavlovskaya is a stanitsa, a Cossack settlement, in the north of Krasnodar Krai. It lies on the flat, fertile steppe of the Kuban, where almost all the land is ploughed. Like many stanitsas, it is large for a rural settlement, and its streets are laid out in a broad grid of long, straight blocks with generous gardens behind the houses.
A small steppe river winds through the settlement with ponds and reservoirs along its course. The curved lines of the river contrast sharply with the straight streets. A railway line and main roads, including the route towards Rostov-on-Don, pass through the area and give the map strong diagonals.
A Pavlovskaya map poster is a study in regularity. The grid of streets extends across the frame, broken only by the river and the transport lines, and beyond it lie huge rectangular fields.
