Pingzhuang lies in the Chifeng area of southeastern Inner Mongolia, in hilly country near the border with Liaoning. The town is known as a coal-mining centre, and its layout reflects that history: residential districts, industrial sites and rail lines strung along the valley floor rather than a single round centre.
On the map, the hills around the town show up as blank space, which makes the built-up area look like a long ribbon following the lower ground. Main roads run lengthways through the valley, with shorter streets branching off to housing blocks and works. The rail infrastructure that served the mines adds long, gentle curves to an otherwise practical grid.
