Portalegre is the capital of the northern Alentejo district, built on a hillside at the foot of the Serra de São Mamede near the Spanish border. From above, the historic centre is a compact knot of narrow streets that once lay within walls, crowned by the cathedral and the remains of a castle. Around it, newer districts extend across the lower slopes in looser, broader patterns.
The city's cathedral dates from the sixteenth century, and Portalegre became known for its textile industry, particularly the hand-woven Portalegre tapestries, a craft still associated with the city. The surrounding landscape shifts from the green, forested slopes of the serra to the open cork oak and olive country typical of the Alentejo.
