El mapa
Radebeul stretches along the northern bank of the Elbe just downstream from Dresden. On the map, it forms a long band between the river and the steep slopes of the Lößnitz. Below, streets of villas and gardens fill the flat ground. Above, the terraced vineyards and wooded hills rise sharply, and roads climb them in steep lines and switchbacks.
Radebeul is one of the centres of the Saxon wine region, and its vineyard slopes, with estates such as Hoflößnitz, have been cultivated for centuries. The town is also known for the Karl May Museum in the writer's former villa, and for the Lößnitzgrundbahn, a narrow-gauge steam railway that runs up a side valley toward Moritzburg.
A Radebeul map poster shows a clear three-part landscape: the river, the garden city and the hills. The fine grid of villa streets ends at the foot of the vineyards, and the winding valley of the steam railway leads away to the north. It is a refined map for anyone attached to the Elbe valley.
Steep terraced slopes above the town mark the edge of the built-up area. Roads and paths climb them in tight curves and straight lines.
The river runs along the southern edge, with meadows between it and the town, adding a broad curve of open space.
The Lößnitzgrund side valley carries the historic steam railway north toward Moritzburg, a slender line winding out of town.
