Ratekau is a municipality in Ostholstein, north of Lübeck and just inland from the Lübeck Bay coast. It is not one compact town. It is a group of villages spread across gently rolling farmland, each with its own small core and connected by country roads. From above, it looks like a scatter of settlements on a green ground.
The village of Ratekau is known for its Romanesque fieldstone church, one of the old churches of the region's medieval Christianisation. To the north-east, the municipality borders the Hemmelsdorfer See. The bottom of this lake includes the lowest point of land in Germany, well below sea level, even though the lake looks calm and ordinary from above.

The motorway from Lübeck toward the Baltic resorts passes through in a long, straight line. It contrasts sharply with the winding country lanes that link the villages.
