Reddipālaiyam lies on the western side of the Chennai metropolitan area in Tamil Nadu, on low, level ground that has seen steady growth as the city expands. From above, the pattern is typical of the region's fast-growing edges: a few older lanes around a village core, surrounded by newer plots laid out in straight rows of residential streets.
The map shows how growth has happened piece by piece. Blocks of housing appear in small rectangular patches, each with its own orientation, fitted between main roads and remaining open land. Where layouts meet, the streets shift direction slightly, creating an intricate patchwork that is more interesting on paper than it might seem at street level.
Because the land is flat, water and roads do most of the work in defining edges, and the region's traditional irrigation tanks appear as open shapes in the surrounding plain.
