Renhe is a town in northern Yunnan province in southwest China, in rugged country where mountain ranges fold closely together and settlements have to fit into whatever flat ground the valleys allow. The surrounding landscape is one of steep slopes, terraced fields and winding roads linking scattered villages.
On a map this setting is immediately obvious. The town takes an elongated shape, following the valley floor, with its main streets running lengthwise and short side lanes stepping up toward the hills. Roads leaving the town twist sharply as they climb, and a stream or river channel often traces the lowest line of the valley beside them.
