El mapa
Ribnitz-Damgarten was formed in 1950 by merging two neighbouring towns: Ribnitz on the Mecklenburg side of the Recknitz and Damgarten on the Pomeranian side. On a map the river still divides them. It flows into the Saaler Bodden, a shallow Baltic lagoon, and the two historic centres sit on either side of the mouth, linked by road.
Ribnitz, the larger of the two, has a compact old town with a market square and the former convent of the Poor Clares, which now houses the German Amber Museum. Amber has long been associated with this stretch of coast, and the museum is one of the town's best-known sights. Damgarten, to the east, is smaller and more spread out.
Beyond the towns lie reed-fringed shores and flat farmland. To the north, the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula separates the lagoon from the open sea. A Ribnitz-Damgarten map poster shows the whole arrangement: two old towns, one river, and the calm water of the Bodden, where land and sea blur together.
The river that separates the two former towns once marked the boundary between Mecklenburg and Pomerania. On the map it runs between the two centres toward the lagoon.
The shallow lagoon spreads north of Ribnitz. Its soft, irregular shoreline of reeds and meadows gives the poster a broad area of open water.
The historic core of Ribnitz is compact and easy to read, with streets gathered around the market square and the convent that now houses the German Amber Museum.
