Rijeka is Croatia's largest port, set at the head of Kvarner Bay in the northern Adriatic. The city occupies a narrow strip between the sea and steep limestone hills, and its map is long and layered. The port and railway run along the shore, the old town and main streets sit just behind them, and residential districts climb the slopes on switchback roads.
The Rječina River cuts through the city in a deep gorge before reaching the sea; both names mean river. In the historic centre, the Korzo promenade runs parallel to the waterfront. Above, the castle and pilgrimage church of Trsat look down from a hilltop reached by a long stone staircase. A Rijeka map poster frames all of this against the open bay.
The city has a long industrial and maritime history. The modern torpedo was developed here in the 1860s, and shipyards and docks are still part of the waterfront. Above the centre, roads zigzag up steep hillsides. Their curves give the upper districts a rhythm very different from the flat waterfront.
