Rosso is the capital of the Trarza region in southwestern Mauritania, on the northern bank of the Senegal River. On a map, the river is the defining feature, curving along the southern edge of town and separating it from Rosso, Senegal, its namesake on the opposite bank. The crossing between the two is a well-known border point.
The town itself spreads north from the river in a mix of regular and irregular blocks, with main roads leading toward Nouakchott and other parts of the country. Around it, the river's floodplain supports irrigated farming, and the map shows canals and field patterns giving way to drier land farther north.
