Sabunçu is a settlement in the north-eastern part of Baku, on the Absheron Peninsula of Azerbaijan. It stands in one of the oldest oil-producing districts in the world, and the landscape around it has been shaped by more than a century of extraction. On the map, residential streets share the ground with industrial land, tracks and service roads.
The Sabunchu oil fields were among those that made Baku a leading centre of the global oil industry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1926 the electric railway from Baku to Sabunçu opened, often described as the first electrified railway in the Soviet Union, and the name remains part of the city's transport history.
From above, the settlement appears as a cluster of low-rise blocks bordered by open, semi-industrial terrain on the dry, flat peninsula.
