Saint Michael is a city in Wright County, Minnesota, northwest of Minneapolis. On a map it shows two kinds of pattern side by side. Straight section-line roads left over from the rural survey grid divide the land into large squares. Newer neighbourhoods fill those squares with looping streets, cul-de-sacs and small ponds, softening the original geometry without erasing it.
The city covers a large area for its population, because much of its land was once farmland and township land that the community took in as it grew. That gives the map an unusual texture. Clusters of curving streets are separated by open fields, wetlands and the small lakes typical of central Minnesota, so built-up and open ground alternate across the frame.
Interstate 94 passes close to the city's northern side, a long straight line unlike anything around it. A Saint Michael map poster shows a place in the middle of change.
