Samfya sits on the western shore of Lake Bangweulu in Zambia's Luapula Province, and from above the lake dominates the view. The shoreline runs in a long curve of beach. The town's roads stay a short distance back from it in a loose pattern of streets and tracks that serves houses, markets and landing places for fishing boats.
Inland the map thins quickly into woodland and farmland crossed by a few main roads that connect to other towns in the province. That makes the Samfya map poster unusually open, with a wide stretch of water on one side and a light scatter of streets on the other. The shoreline between them is the strongest line on the page.
Lake Bangweulu is a large, shallow lake edged by wide swamps, and fishing is central to life along its shores. Samfya is known for white-sand beaches, which are unusual so far inland. The town is also a starting point for boat trips to the inhabited islands out on the lake.
