Samuyuzi is in the Ili region of northwestern Xinjiang, where the Tian Shan mountains enclose one of the greenest river valleys in Central Asia. Snowmelt from the surrounding ranges feeds a network of irrigation channels. Seen from above, the landscape is organised into a fine grid of fields, with the town at the centre of the pattern.
The built-up area follows straight roads, mostly laid out on a regular plan. It is flanked by long rows of trees that line the canals and field edges. In the Ili valley, these shelterbelts and water channels are as much a part of the map as the streets. They repeat outward in thin parallel lines until the terrain begins to rise.
A Samuyuzi map poster emphasises that order. It shows the modest town grid, the straight lines of cultivation around it and the sense of a settlement shaped by water management in a mountain basin. On paper, it is a study in repetition and restraint, drawn from a region few people see.
