Santa Fe Springs lies in south-eastern Los Angeles County, between Whittier, Norwalk and Downey. Its map looks unlike the suburbs around it. Large rectangular lots of warehouses, factories and distribution centres dominate, and residential streets form smaller, finer pockets. Interstate 5 and Interstate 605 run along its edges, and the San Gabriel River follows a straight concrete channel near its western side.
The city's identity comes from oil. The Santa Fe Springs field, discovered in 1921, was one of the most productive in the country during the 1920s and filled the area with derricks. Heritage Park preserves part of that earlier history, and the industrial grid that replaced the oil fields still shapes the streets you see from above.
