El mapa
Sassenheim lies in the Duin- en Bollenstreek, the strip of sandy land behind the North Sea dunes where the Netherlands grows much of its flower bulbs. On a map the village is a compact core surrounded by a very regular landscape: long rectangular fields, straight ditches and narrow roads, all laid out on the flat ground between Leiden and Haarlem.
At the edge of the village stand the ruins of Teylingen castle, where Countess Jacoba of Bavaria spent her final years in the fifteenth century. The name Teylingen now also belongs to the municipality Sassenheim is part of. Close by to the north is Lisse, with the Keukenhof gardens, and the A44 motorway runs past on its way along the bulb district.
A Sassenheim map poster shows the typical Dutch mix of village and polder: a denser centre with curving residential streets, the motorway and railway as strong lines, and all around it the fine stripes of fields and water. It is a detailed, orderly drawing that suits a clean black-and-white style.
Around the village, the flower fields are long rectangles divided by drainage ditches, which appear on the map as a precise pattern of parallel lines.
The remains of the medieval castle, linked to Jacoba of Bavaria, sit on the village's edge, surrounded by green space and water.
The motorway and the rail line between Leiden and Haarlem cut straight lines past Sassenheim, giving the composition a firm structure.
