El mapa
Schwäbisch Hall lies in northeastern Baden-Württemberg, where the Kocher River cuts a deep, winding valley through the plateau. The old town rises steeply from the river on its west bank. From above, the streets appear bunched and angled, fitted to the slope, with islands and footbridges in the river below.
The town grew rich from its salt spring, and the name Hall is linked to salt. It also minted the Heller, a small silver coin that circulated widely in medieval Germany. The broad steps leading up to St. Michael's Church serve each summer as an open-air theatre stage. On a hill above the valley stands the fortified monastery of Comburg.
A Schwäbisch Hall map poster captures a town defined by topography. The loops of the Kocher, the tightly packed historic core and the roads climbing out of the valley make an intricate yet balanced composition. It suits anyone who has lived here, studied here or walked its steep streets.
The river winds through a narrow valley right below the old town, with small islands and several crossings visible on the map.
The historic centre is densely built on a steep slope, its streets following the terrain rather than any regular plan.
The wide stairway below the church forms the main square and is used as a stage for the town's summer open-air theatre.
