Setakamachi-takayanagi is a district in the former town of Setaka, now part of the city of Miyama in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. It lies on the flat plain that stretches toward the Ariake Sea. On the map, it combines a small cluster of irregular streets with the wide, open grid of the surrounding farmland.
The Chikugo plain is dense with water. Creeks, irrigation ditches and small rivers wind between the fields, and the paddies are divided into neat rectangles. Older roads wander gently between farmhouses, while newer ones run straight. The hills to the east mark the edge of the plain.
A Setakamachi-takayanagi map poster shows the texture of rural Kyushu at close range.
