Old town lanes
The historic quarter is a tight maze of irregular lanes. Its texture is very different from the broad, straight avenues of the newer districts around it.

El mapa
Shache, historically known as Yarkand, lies in the south-west of the Tarim Basin, on an oasis watered by the Yarkand River as it flows down from the mountains to the south. From above, the town is a compact knot surrounded by a dense patchwork of irrigated fields, canals and village roads. The desert begins where the water runs out.
For centuries Yarkand was one of the major stops on the southern Silk Road, linked to Kashgar, Khotan and the mountain passes beyond. In the sixteenth century it became the capital of the Yarkent Khanate, and the tombs of its rulers remain in the old town. The khanate is also associated with Amannisa Khan, the queen credited with collecting the Uyghur Twelve Muqam.
A Shache map poster brings out the contrast between the dense old quarter, with its irregular lanes, and the wider modern streets laid out around it. Beyond the edge of town, the fine lines of irrigation channels and farm tracks fill the frame. The map shows how an oasis settlement is built entirely around water.
The historic quarter is a tight maze of irregular lanes. Its texture is very different from the broad, straight avenues of the newer districts around it.
Around the town, narrow roads and irrigation channels divide the land into small fields. They form a dense, fine-grained pattern across the outer parts of the map.
The river that makes the oasis possible runs past the town. It feeds the network of canals that the whole settlement and its farmland depend on.

Por qué Shache
A map of Shache speaks to anyone with roots in the southern Tarim oases, and to travellers who followed the old Silk Road route between Kashgar and Khotan. Its mix of old lanes and field patterns reads as a detailed, almost textile image on a wall.
Add your own title and subtitle or a date, or keep the coordinates line as it is. Choose from five styles (Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand), and get the HD files for $9 or a printed poster on matte paper.
