Shangi lies in Rwanda's Western Province, in the Nyamasheke area close to the eastern shore of Lake Kivu. This is a country of steep hills and deep valleys, and from above the settlement appears less as a grid than as a web of roads tracing ridges and descending toward the water.
The surrounding hills are heavily cultivated, and the map reflects this in a scatter of small tracks and footpaths linking homes, fields and neighbouring communities. Lines curve constantly, rarely running straight for long, because the terrain decides their course. Where the land drops toward the lake, the pattern thins and the shoreline adds a single, softer edge.
