Sheikhpura is the headquarters of a small district in south Bihar, on the plain south of the Ganges. On the map the town forms a compact core of narrow, closely packed lanes, with a few main roads leading out toward neighbouring towns. Beyond the built-up edge the pattern opens quickly into fields and scattered villages.
The area's landscape is not entirely flat. Low rocky hills appear in the district, and the region is known locally for stone quarrying. These higher areas break the evenness of the plain and give the map some contrast: bare, empty areas next to the tightly drawn grain of the old town.
