El mapa
Sheksna takes its name from the river it stands on, in the western part of Vologda Oblast. The Sheksna is part of the Volga–Baltic Waterway, the chain of rivers, lakes and canals that connects the Volga basin to the Baltic Sea. On the map, the broad band of water is the dominant feature, and the settlement is laid out along its bank.
Around the built-up area the land is mostly forest and wetland, cut by roads and a railway line. The streets are fairly regular, with blocks of housing and industrial sites set back from the water. Because the surrounding country is so open, the town's outline is easy to read: a compact cluster of streets leaning on a wide navigable river.
A Sheksna map poster captures that simple, strong composition. The river gives the image its weight and direction, and the grid of streets beside it adds fine detail. In a minimal black-and-white print, the waterway reads as the working artery it has long been for this corner of northern Russia.
The broad Sheksna runs past the town as part of the Volga–Baltic Waterway, the largest and most striking shape on the whole map.
Engineering works along the waterway, built to keep river traffic moving between the Volga and the Baltic, show as crisp, straight lines at the water's edge.
Dense northern forest and wetland close in around the streets, leaving the town as a clear, compact shape beside the river.
