Shenjiamen lies on the southeastern shore of Zhoushan Island, in the archipelago off the Zhejiang coast. Its harbour is a narrow strait between the main island and a smaller island opposite. The town stretches along the water in a long, thin band, with docks, markets and processing plants lining the shore and the streets climbing onto the hills behind.
The port is widely regarded as one of the largest fishing harbours in China, and the Zhoushan fishing grounds nearby are among the country's most productive. At the height of the season, thousands of vessels crowd the channel. The Putuo district around it also includes Putuoshan, the Buddhist pilgrimage island a short distance offshore.
A Shenjiamen map poster is dominated by the meeting of land and sea. There is the sinuous harbour channel, the dense strip of waterfront streets and the islands on either side. The coastline carries most of the drawing, and the town reads as a line of activity pressed between hills and water.
