Shusha sits on a rocky plateau at roughly 1,400 metres, with sheer drops on several sides. From above, the streets bend to follow the terrain, climbing and turning around the remains of the old fortress walls. The town has a clear edge where the land falls away. That sharp outline, with the settlement on one side and empty slope on the other, is what makes the map so legible.
The town was founded in the mid-eighteenth century as a stronghold of the Karabakh Khanate. It became known for its music, especially mugham, and was sometimes described as the conservatory of the Caucasus. Azerbaijan regained control of Shusha in 2020 and named it the country's cultural capital the following year. Reconstruction has been under way ever since.

Stretches of the eighteenth-century defensive wall trace the approaches to the town. They add a strong curving line that frames the older quarters inside.

This open plain on the plateau rim, long used for gatherings and horse races, appears as a calm, empty space next to the tight street network.
