El mapa
Sondrio is the capital of Valtellina, the long valley of the Adda river in northern Lombardy. The town sits on the valley floor at the mouth of a side valley, where the Mallero torrent comes down from the north to join the Adda. That gives Sondrio a clear structure on a map: a centre bounded by rivers, the flat valley floor to the south and mountains rising sharply behind.
The slopes above the town are lined with terraced vineyards, among the most characteristic in the Alps, where Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca, grows behind dry-stone walls. From above, the terraces become bands of fine, contour-like lines. Narrow roads switchback up to hamlets and to Castel Masegra, the castle that overlooks the old town.
The historic centre keeps a compact, irregular street pattern around its squares, while newer districts spread more loosely across the valley floor. A Sondrio map poster brings all of this into one frame: the narrow course of the Mallero, the broad curve of the Adda and the mountain roads twisting upward toward the Rhaetian Alps.
The Mallero runs through the town in a narrow channel before meeting the Adda. This meeting of rivers anchors the whole composition and divides the town into readable parts.
Rows of vineyard terraces climb the sunny, south-facing side of the valley. Their dense pattern of parallel lines gives the northern part of the map its texture.
Hairpin roads climb from the valley floor to villages and viewpoints above the town. Their tight zigzags are among the most graphic details on the poster.
