El mapa
Spanish Fork lies in the southern part of Utah Valley, south of Provo, where the Spanish Fork River leaves its canyon and crosses the valley floor towards Utah Lake. The town was laid out by Latter-day Saint settlers in the 1850s on the broad, regular grid typical of the region, with numbered streets and large blocks. From above, the pattern stretches evenly across former farmland towards the foothills.
The name recalls the Domínguez–Escalante expedition, Spanish Franciscan explorers who passed through the area in 1776. Spanish Fork is also known for one of the earliest Icelandic settlements in the United States, begun in the 1850s by converts who emigrated from Iceland, a heritage still marked by a monument in town. Interstate 15 runs along its western side.
A Spanish Fork map poster makes the underlying order easy to see. The grid holds steady across the valley, interrupted by the diagonal course of the river, the sweep of the interstate and the curving roads of newer subdivisions. To the east, the lines give way to the steep terrain of the Wasatch Range and the entrance to Spanish Fork Canyon.
Wide, evenly spaced streets and large square blocks follow the original settlers' plan, the numbered grid that still organises the town's older core.
The river cuts diagonally across the grid on its way to Utah Lake, one of the few natural lines allowed to break the valley's regular geometry.
To the south-east, streets end against the foothills where Spanish Fork Canyon opens, the route of both the river and the highway into the mountains.
