Springfield is the county seat of Robertson County, north of Nashville close to the Kentucky border. Its map is centered on a traditional courthouse square, with a tight grid of downtown blocks around it. Past the center, the streets relax into long residential avenues and newer subdivisions, and highways lead off toward Nashville and the surrounding countryside.
The land around the town is gently rolling, crossed by creeks lined with trees, which appear on the map as thin irregular lines winding between the fields. Robertson County has long been associated with dark-fired tobacco, and much of the surrounding land is still farmed, keeping the town's edges open.
