El mapa
Stirling grew where the River Forth could be crossed at its lowest reliable point, beneath a steep volcanic crag. The castle crowns the rock, and the Old Town descends from it along a single ridge, with closes and wynds branching off the main street. Below, the later town spreads over flatter ground, while the Forth winds in tight meanders across the carse to the east.
Its position made it one of the most contested places in Scottish history. William Wallace and Andrew Moray won the Battle of Stirling Bridge nearby in 1297, and Robert the Bruce defeated the English army at Bannockburn, just south of town, in 1314. The National Wallace Monument stands on the Abbey Craig across the river, and the university occupies a wooded campus around a loch at Airthrey.
A Stirling map poster shows that history written into the landform. The castle rock and ridge appear as a dense spine of streets, the Forth draws looping curves across the lower ground, and the old bridge and railway crossings mark where routes have long converged. On the edges, the slopes towards the Ochils and the university grounds add a softer texture.
From the castle esplanade, the Old Town's streets run down a narrow volcanic ridge, a linear pattern of closes and wynds that stands out clearly on the map.
East of the town the river twists in a series of tight meanders across flat carse land, among the most striking curves anywhere on a Scottish map.
Across the Forth, the wooded crag of the Wallace Monument faces the castle, with the university's loch and campus spread out at its foot.
