El mapa
Svilengrad sits in the far southeast of Bulgaria, in Haskovo Province, close to where Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey meet. The town is built along the Maritsa, and for centuries it was a waypoint on the road between the Balkans and Constantinople. Its name refers to its old silk production.
The river shapes the whole map. The Maritsa winds past the town in wide, loose bends, and the streets grow from its banks. The most famous crossing is the sixteenth-century Mustafa Pasha Bridge, a long arched stone bridge built during the Ottoman period and still standing over the water.
A Svilengrad map poster shows the town's compact centre, the curving river and the main roads and railway heading towards the nearby border crossings. The plain around it is mostly farmland, so the town sits as a clear, dense shape in open country with the river running through it.
An Ottoman-era stone bridge of many arches spans the Maritsa, one of the oldest and longest surviving structures of its kind in the region.
The river swings past the town in broad curves, the strongest natural line on the map and the reason the settlement grew up on this spot.
Highways and rail lines run southeast from the town towards the Greek and Turkish borders, reflecting Svilengrad's long role as a crossing point.
