Dense urban fabric
The town is very compact, so the map is packed with streets from edge to edge. Almost no gaps appear, which gives the poster a rich, even texture typical of Silesian mining towns.

El mapa
Świętochłowice covers very little ground, yet it is one of the most densely built towns in Poland. On a map it shows almost no empty space: rows of streets, tenement blocks and rail lines run right up to the borders with Chorzów, Ruda Śląska, Bytom and Katowice. It is hard to tell where one town ends and the next begins, which is typical of the Upper Silesian conurbation.
The town grew out of several separate settlements, among them Lipiny, Chropaczów, Zgoda and Piaśniki. Each still has its own small cluster of streets. On a Świętochłowice map poster these districts appear as patches of slightly different texture, joined by tram routes and main roads. The Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa, the expressway that links the Silesian cities, cuts across the map as a broad, clean line.
Heavy industry shaped the town. The Florian steelworks and the mines left large sites, railway sidings and spoil ground that still break up the street grid. The town's history also includes the Zgoda camp of 1945, which is remembered locally today. Between the industrial land are green spaces such as the park and ponds at Skałka, which appear as soft, open shapes among the dense blocks.

The Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa runs through Świętochłowice on its way between the region's cities. On the map it is a wide, steady line that stands out against the finer street pattern.
The park at Skałka and its water bodies form one of the few open areas in town. Their rounded outlines contrast with the tight grid of tenements and industrial ground around them.
